Only 3 TTC’s have met required standards to reopen in September, CS Magoha

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha now says only three teachers training colleges in the country may be reopened in September after attaining the required percentage on putting in place COVID-19 containment measures recommended by the government.

The three colleges include Murang’a Teachers Training College at 80 per cent , Kericho TTC 70 per cent followed by Asumbi Teachers Training College in Rangwe Sub County Homa Bay County at 65 per cent.

According to Prof. Magoha, the three colleges have put in place necessary infrastructure recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

Speaking when he toured Asumbi TTC in Rangwe Sub County, the Education CS said the government will not allow colleges to resume operations in September if they have not fully met the required standards.

According to the CS, some institutions do not have enough thermoguns while others have not put in place measures to ensure that students maintain social distance.

He stated that Teachers Training Colleges are expected to admit new students who will be taught the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) from September next year after students undertaking studies in the old education system complete their education in December.

On the other hand, the CS revealed that the government has not cleared any university in the country to reopen and those that may have declared themselves ready to resume learning are lying to students because they have not been cleared by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education.

Prof. Magoha stated that only Strathmore University is trying to meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
