The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially set the stage for one of the largest career progression exercises in recent history, rolling out a massive validation process for 34,016 teacher promotion vacancies.
Across the country, shortlisted educators are receiving text message notifications directing them to various regional, county, and sub-county centers. A typical invitation text sent to applicants reads:
“You are hereby invited for promotion interview to be held wef 8/9/2026 to 15/9/2026. Venue: Uasin Gishu High School Time: 8:00 am. Collect invitation letter at TSC Sub County Office Kiptagich house immediately P.M. KASYIM. SCD. TURBO.”
A critical shift defines this current promotion cycle: the traditional oral interview format has been entirely restructured.
In previous years, teachers faced nerve-wracking Q&A sessions before panels, answering policy questions such as “List four professional documents a teacher should have?” or “Name three national goals of education?” Educators spent weeks cramming educational policies, commission circulars, and administrative structures.
This time around, the format has changed significantly. The exercise will largely focus on meticulous document verification against a pre-determined scoresheet.
Because the heavy lifting of scoring—incorporating years of service, professional qualifications, age brackets, and performance metrics—is calculated via the established career progression guidelines, live panels are designed to move much faster per candidate.
The primary objective of the panel is to cross-examine physical portfolios against digital submissions to ensure absolute authenticity before final recommendations are made.
The 2026 Interview Roadmap and Timelines
Managed directly by Regional, County, and Sub-County Directors, the roadmap is tightly scheduled to ensure a seamless transition across educational tiers.
Shortlisting and Notifications: Running from Monday, August 31, to Friday, September 11, 2026 (10 days). Field directors coordinate local notifications, physical letter collections, and venue preparations.
Primary School Interviews: Scheduled as the first wave, running from September 8 to September 15, 2026 (6 days). These are managed at regional and county levels, targeting foundational promotional grades.
Post-Primary and CSO Interviews:Scheduled from September 17 to September 25, 2026 (7 days). These are spearheaded by the Director of Staffing alongside regional, county, and sub-county directorates, covering secondary schools and Teacher Training Colleges.
Phase One: Documents to Present During Live Promotion Panels
Because the interview is fundamentally a document verification exercise, the physical file a teacher brings determines their success.
The volume and administrative complexity of the portfolio scale depending on the position sought—classroom teachers require standard foundational records, whereas applicants targeting institutional leadership (Principals, Deputy Principals, Senior Masters, and Headteachers) must present comprehensive evidence of administrative responsibility.
Portfolios must be neatly ordered, paginated, and certified where necessary. The core documents required include:
Original National Identity Card (ID): Serves as primary verification of Kenyan citizenship. Teachers must bring both the original document and a clear, legible photocopy.
Original Academic and Professional Certificates: The complete sequence of educational background, spanning KCSE certificates, PTE certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor’s Degrees, and Master’s Degrees (where applicable). Names must match uniformly across all items.
Letter of Appointment to Current Grade:Official documentation proving entry point and tenure in the present grade, confirming that the mandatory minimum years required for promotion consideration have been fully served.
Latest TSC Payslip:A recent computer-generated payslip confirming active employment status, station codes, and proper payroll integration.
Last Promotional Letter: The foundational instrument elevating the teacher to their current grade, establishing career trajectory.
Letter Assigning Responsibility (For Administrative Aspirants):Crucial for Head of Institution (HOI), Deputy Head of Institution (DHOI), or Senior Teacher candidates, including Board of Management (BOM) appointment letters or official TSC acting capacity deployment letters.
Performance Appraisal Reports (TPAD): Mandatory performance records for the last three consecutive years (2023, 2024, and 2025). Panels heavily interrogate appraisal metrics to gauge instructional delivery, lesson planning, and learner outcomes.
Evidence of Professional Engagement:Documentation highlighting contributions beyond routine classroom teaching, such as appointments as a TSC TIMEC member, CBC trainer, CEMASTEA county trainer, KNEC examiner or item developer, KICD curriculum panelist, textbook evaluator, or published author.
Co-Curricular Engagement Records:Evidence of active participation and leadership in sports, music festivals, science congress, ball games, and regional or national events.
Phase Two: Statutory Clearances After Successful Interviews
Navigating the live verification panel successfully leads to a secondary compliance phase before formal appointment letters are issued. Candidates recommended for promotion must submit mandatory clearance certificates from national institutions:
Valid Certificate of Good Conduct:Issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), proving a clean criminal record.
HELB Clearance Certificate:Issued by the Higher Education Loans Board, confirming loan compliance or good standing.
KRA Tax Compliance Certificate:Proof of active tax remittance from the Kenya Revenue Authority.
EACC Clearance:Certification of adherence to Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya regarding leadership and integrity.
CRB Clearance Certificate:A credit reference bureau report showing clean credit standing or active debt management.
With interviews moving swiftly to verify these detailed files, shortlisted candidates are advised to organize their records methodically to ensure a smooth transition through the 2026 promotion window.
