The national Grade 10 selection and placement exercise is officially back on track following a swift and decisive intervention by the Ministry of Education.

The exercise, which serves as a critical milestone for nearly 1.2 million Grade 9 learners transitioning under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework, had encountered significant technical bottlenecks that temporarily brought operations to a halt.

Under the new directives issued from the Ministry headquarters, the revamped KEMIS selection portal will go live at midnight on Sunday, September 6, 2026

To ensure order, security, and data integrity during this high-stakes period, the Ministry rolled out a comprehensive set of operational guidelines for education officials and Heads of Institutions (HOIs):

Secure Credential Distribution:Log-in credentials for the secure selection and placement portal are channeled directly to Sub-County Directors of Education (SCDEs), who then distribute them to individual schools.Due to strict data protection regulations, schools are mandated to handle these credentials with the utmost confidentiality.

Public Search Access:While school portals require secure credentials for final submissions, a public search portal remains accessible to parents, guardians, and stakeholders.This allows families to independently search, verify, and filter available schools and subject combinations.

Data Rectification and Gender Updates: Junior schools experiencing data discrepancies—such as incorrect gender mappings—are empowered to update pupil records in real-time in close conjunction with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

Handling Duplicate Assessment Numbers: Where candidates possess double assessment numbers due to historical database overlaps, schools must verify and ensure that only the active, legitimate assessment number is utilized for final placement processing.

Profile Verification and Archiving:Heads of Institutions must print individual learner selection profiles immediately after submission.These profiles require mandatory physical signatures from parents or guardians and must be securely archived in school files for future audit verification.

Inclusivity and Exception Tracking:Schools are directed to actively track down and follow up on any learners who are currently absent to guarantee that no eligible candidate misses out on placement.Furthermore, in tragic cases involving deceased learners, HOIs must formally notify the respective Sub-County Director of Education in writing.

Zero-Tolerance on Levies:The Ministry issued a stern warning reiterating that the entire selection and placement process is entirely free of charge.Schools and administrators are strictly prohibited from charging parents any administrative fees, computer levies, or operational charges for the exercise.

Streamlined Subject Combinations and Career Guidance

A major point of adjustment in the current selection framework involves how learners choose their academic direction.

Candidates are required to select a minimum of one and a maximum of two sets of subject combinations.

To maximize efficiency, schools have been advised to leverage the newly integrated pathways checker tool, which filters options rapidly based on learner aptitude and institutional capacity.

Crucially, if a learner’s first choice of subject combinations successfully secures them a spot across all their preferred school choices, there is no requirement to invoke or process a second set of combinations.

The Ministry has also emphasized the importance of comprehensive career guidance, particularly addressing common anxieties surrounding niche subjects.

For instance, school counselors have been instructed to inform learners that not picking Aviation as an examinable high school subject does not permanently lock them out of pursuing an aviation career later in life, as foundational competencies can be acquired dynamically at higher levels of training.

The New 8-School Selection Hierarchy

Moving away from the previous year’s framework—where candidates were permitted to spread their choices across up to 12 different institutions—the 2026 Grade 9 cohort is strictly restricted to selecting a maximum of eight (8) Senior Schools.

This deliberate reduction forces a more calculated, strategic approach to decision-making, ensuring that every slot counts.
