Why TSC chopped 200/- from all teachers June payslips

Teachers are lamenting after they found out that sh 200 disappeared from their June 2024 salaries. Already majority of mainstream banks have paid the June salaries.

However many Saccos are yet to effect payment of June salaries into teachers accounts. Unlike previous years, this years June salaries delayed and teachers were frustrated waiting for its release.

Usually Teachers Service Commission (TSC) pays teachers June salaries by 20th of that month. Sometimes teachers receive salaries as early as 18th June. This is because the government financial year ends in June.

This week teachers have reacted following a deduction of sh 200 on their June payslips. TSC is yet to issue a statement on this disappearance.

Sources close to the Commission however say this was erroneous and that the deducted amount shall be refunded.

Some teachers speculated that this was a return of the Kenya Women Teachers Association (Kewota) deductions which saw both male and female teachers lose sh 200 from their payslips to a union they never joined.

Previously there have been cases of teachers missing some shillings in their monthly payslips. Teachers have in many occassions reported variations in their net salaries.

One time TSC unmasked a ring of payroll personnel who were making unauthorized deductions on teachers payslips and had to be transferred to other departments.

It is our hope that the Commission will come out clearly to address this issue to quell teachers anger especially a time like this where teachers are facing economic burden characterized by high inflation and shrinking payslips.
