TSC to deploy P1 graduate teachers with C plain in KCSE to junior school

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has lowered requirements for deployment of primary school teachers to junior school.

Its a windfall for teachers who acquired degrees certificates but had grade C plain in KCSE mean grade as well as in the two teaching subjects.

In a memo dated 4th July 2024, TSC has requested to be furnished with details of teachers working in primary schools but are holders of diploma and degree in secondary schools with C plain and above in KCSE.

The lowering of the deployment requirements comes at a time the Commission is facing wrath of junior school intern teachers who are pushing for their confirmation to permanent terms.

TSC has on its payroll a total of 46,000 teachers serving on internship terms.

These are 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school intern teachers recruited in February 2023. 450 secondary school intern teachers recruited in April 2023. 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school intern teachers recruited in September 2023.

The plan to confirm the intern teachers on PNP terms was suspended after the Finance Bill was annulled by President William Ruto following pressure from Gen Z.

In an interview Ruto revealed that there are no near plans to confirm the teachers due to budget constraints.

Previously P1 teachers with Degree of Education (secondary option) but with C plain in KCSE were required to produce a Diploma for them to be considered for promotion to junior school.

Below is a memo that was released by the Commission.
