Rongo: Two people in custody for marrying a form 2 girl

Two people are in police custody in Rongo for allegedly marrying off a 16-year-old girl.

The girl is a Form Two student at Mbani Secondary School.

According to a report from Rongo Sub-County Hospital, a 30-year-old man picked up the girl from her home in North Kamagambo.

The man identified as Giftophila Odoyo is said to have sealed a marriage agreement with the girl’s family.

He then decided that they go for a HIV test at the hospital before proceeding to his home in Homa Bay.

A nurse who realized that the girl was underage is said to have alerted the police about the marriage.

Officers intercepted the man and the school girl while they were on their way to Homa Bay.

The uncle of the minor was also arrested for marrying off the underage girl.

Mrs. Sofi Odumo, a child activist working with Lulu Foundation, expressed dismay over the incident saying: “Such acts cannot be tolerated.”

She urged police to also arrest and prosecute the parents of the girl for allowing her to be married off.

The suspects are currently detained at Rongo Police Station waiting to be charged in court.
